On Dec. 9th 2013, Grant was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 7.  It was a shock to our family as there is no family history of Type 1.  It has been a lifestyle change for everyone in our house because life does centre a bit more around Grant than it did before.  I am so proud of how Lauren and Ben took on the role of caregivers for Grant when Todd and I were not around.  There was a lot to learn from, recognizing lows and highs, to counting carbs, giving needles, checking blood sugar, checking for ketones and I am sure there are more little things I am missing.

                                                          Happy with a good reading!

The most common question people ask me is, how did you know to take him to the doctor?  The first sign for me was his water bottle was empty when he came home from school and I asked him about it and he said yes he drank it all and even refilled it at the water fountain.  One night that week before he was diagnosed I heard him up to pee in the night and I asked if he wanted to sleep with me because Daddy was away.  I had a hidden agenda because I wanted to see how many times he was getting up.  Well the news wasn't good, he got up 4 more times that night!  The tell tale sign for me was when he went to hockey on Saturday he couldn't make it through the hour of ice time without coming off to go to the bathroom.

I took him to the walk-in clinic and he peed in a cup and I heard the diagnosis I didn't want to hear, but knew in my heart that I had known all that week, but was in denial.  The guilt then set in that I didn't take him sooner, but I wasn't ready to hear those words.  I knew it meant a lifetime of finger pokes, needles, checkups, highs and lows, living our life on a stricter schedule.  Thankfully, we still caught it early even though I waited those couple of days.  They credited me to bringing him so quick because no damage was done.  The doctors and nurses didn't know the turmoil that was going on in my head.

Well life before Type 1 is a distant memory after a year and a half of living with it in our family.  I credit that all to Grant who is an amazing boy!  Days that he should complain, he doesn't!  Testing before hockey, before lunch, at birthday parties are all teaching moments for him.  He is proud of who he is and uses those moments to share with new and old friends what he has to do everyday to stay healthy.

His thigh is one of the sites we use for his insulin injection

I am the strong and independent type!

I will share more of what life is like living with T1D periodically.  It is always changing for Grant as he grows.  I scrapbooked a couple pages on Grant's journey with T1D so he will know when he grows up how courageous he was at age 7 when faced with this life changing illness.

Behind the Lens https://www.beththomanderphotography.com/blog/2014/11/behind-lens Well, after a few fall seasons of friends asking me if I would do their family photos and me saying, "No, I don't do that" I have finally decided to do just that.  In August, I set up my website, purchased my domain name, made a facebook page and ordered business cards.  This all of a sudden became scary!!!  I was really going to do this and get paid for it!   What was I thinking, I didn't need more stress!

My first project was to get my name out there to friends and the public to let them know I am "doing" this now.  So, I decided to do a photo fundraiser for Sackville Minor Baseball.  At our September tournament I took about 1000 action shots from the weekend and donated all of the sales back to SMB.  It was a fun day at the ball field and I in turn booked some family photo sessions from it.

Well my first family photo session was in September and I was terrified!  I have been taking photos for years and for an instant forgot everything I knew.  Deep breaths and told myself "You got this!"  Well, the pictures turned out great and they were thrilled with them!  Since that first photo shoot my confidence has increased and I am loving this new adventure that I have added to my busy life!

Some of the fun photo shoots I have been on since September:

I have so enjoyed spending time with these families and all of my photo families and capturing their beautiful family memories.  If you want to check out more of my portfolio you can see some sneak peaks on my Facebook page and my website:  Beth Thomander Photography

I am looking forward to setting up my studio over the winter so I can offer indoor photo sessions.

I can help you capture your memories as well...

Warmly,
Beth

Disney First and Last!!! https://www.beththomanderphotography.com/blog/2014/7/disney-first-and-last-not-my-first-and-3

Disney First and Last!!!

Not my first and last time to Disney but I completed my cover and my first and last pages in my Disney album!

When I think about my Disney Album from our 2013 Vacation I get overwhelmed!!!  I took soooo many photos!!!!  This weekend I cropped with the Pixels2Pages Vacation Crop and I got inspired to get some pages completed!!!  I am loving the Magical Moments kit from Simple Pleasure Designs by Jennifer Fehr.   There are so many sweet elements inspired by Disney and the papers are gorgeous!!!

If you are looking for some unique Disney content look no further!  Her designs are like none other!  They are fun and whimsical for a Disney theme!

I love the poka-dot paper for the front cover and my black and white photo pops off of the cover.

Opening page using Serendipity Squares Template from Pixels2Pages  which was doubled with the Serendipity Squares Challenge.  I love Jennifer's designs for the squares I made from her papers and embellishments from Magical Moments!

My closing page using the Photo Blend Background Challenge from Pixels2Pages and Paper from Magical Moments in the Waltograph font.

Back cover is simple and fun and I always add my name to the back of the book so people will know I created the book!

I am far from done but this is a start and getting started sometimes is the hardest task!  I have a few pages done in-between these pages, but still lots of memories to capture!

I will add some more pages here as I complete them!  In the meantime you can check them out on my facebook page Making Memories, Capturing Moments - Beth Thomander by liking my page.

Thanks for dropping by!

Big Sunglasses! https://www.beththomanderphotography.com/blog/2014/7/big-sunglasses-3 "The bigger her sunglasses are, the more manicures she requires and the more complicated her brunch order is going to be."

I saw this quote on a friends facebook timeline and it describes Lauren perfectly!  I just knew I had to do a layout with this quote and I remembered I just took a photo of her with her Christian Dior sunglasses that cover half of her face!

Well Lauren has only gone for manicures a couple of times, but she doesn't have to as she can do an awesome job herself!

This manicure and pedicure I have to give credit to Sandy at All 4 U Esthetics!  She did an awesome job!

As for her brunch order, well her ice cappuccino order is complicated enough!  Medium caramel ice cap made with chocolate milk instead of cream because they fill it more when they use chocolate milk and you might as well put in a large cup so it doesn't overflow and can you ask that girl to make it because she does it better and can you put some whip cream on top and do you really have to charge me the extra! Well I might have exaggerated that a bit but she is pretty particular about her ice cap!!!

I designed this page with Simple Pleasure Designs by Jennifer Fehr using her new kit Vintage {Sugar}!  I LOVE all of the sweet elements in this kit!  Can't wait for it to be released so you can all enjoy it as well!  COMING SOON!

You can shop now in Jennifer's store to pick some of her other beautiful designs!  I love her Disney inspired Magical Moments kit.  I will post some pages soon featuring this kit!

Thank you for your patience! https://www.beththomanderphotography.com/blog/2013/11/first-of-all-id-like-to-thank-each-of-3
First of all, I'd like to thank each of you for your patience as you stuck it out with me over these past few months when I could not give you a firm answer on what we're going to do to continue our Digital scrapbooking and printed projects. Today I have the solution for you.

A Digital Solution for YOU:
I am pleased to announce that I will be working with Heritage Makers - www.heritagemakers.com/betht.  Here's why I think it will work for YOU:
  • It is a digital-only scrapbooking company.
  • their free software program is web-based so can be used on both a Mac or PC.
  • their concept for you, the customer, is interesting - the software, templates and art kits (in the thousands) are FREE. You can chose a Basic account or chose to have a Club HM membership - these monthly memberships are at the $30, $50 and $100 and, in essence, you are pre-purchasing print plans at a discount. These "publishing points" accumulate and you use them when you are ready to print your project - interesting, eh? So rather than spending $ on the software, templates or art, you spend it only on printing.
  • you can stop or start the Club HM subscription any time. For instance, if you are considering a few Christmas gifts, it would be to your advantage to take the Club HM at the Gold Level ($100) for November and receive 150 publishing points - take the savings now - print your gifts and then decide if you need the Gold Level in future months.
  • many of us are still happily using our StoryBook Creator program - that's ok, too. You can continue to create pages/books/projects in SBC and just load the completed pages/projects up to HM's website as jpegs for printing. This is my plan - I will begin to play in the HM Studio program, too, but there is no need to make any changes. I have a video that explains the "how-to" - let me know if you want to see it.
  • Heritage Makers has all the same products we had at CM - including our 12x18 calendars! And a few more items that caught my eye.
  • you can work with me and Heritage Makers from both Canada and the US - there are no border restrictions as I had in CM.
  • Heritage Makers has been in Canada for approx 7 years but mainly out west.  Although it was founded by 2 women in Calgary, it is a US-based company and so you will note that all prices are US$. Since so many of us are now online shoppers, I knew you've be familiar with factoring in an exchange rate. Heritage Makers prices are, in some cases, less than CM. I'm preparing a comparison chart on a few items so I have that info at hand for you.
  • at one point in the past, Heritage Makers and CM printed at the same large printing company - I am good with the quality and I hope to  have samples on hand soon for you to see and touch.

What next? Please go check out my website - www.heritagemakers.com/betht - there's lots of information. Set up your account, join the Club HM if you want to get going on printing your projects. Keep working on your projects!!

I'll be coming out with lots more help and information for you - again, thanks for sticking with me and let's keep having fun with our photos and creating wonderful photobooks and gifts for our families!!!!! I am SO happy to have this sorted out.

Possibilities are Endless!!! https://www.beththomanderphotography.com/blog/2013/5/possibilities-are-endless StoryBook Creator has been a great addition to my business and my family!  I do everything I can in Storybook Creator Software, invites, cards, books, photo panels, Valentines, Christmas cards and on and on...
Since Ben has been in Novice Hockey I have done a Hockey Storybook for him every year.  In the first few years only a handful of the parents bought the books, but then the word got out and more and more parents would ask me, are you doing the hockey books this year?  Now almost all of the parents buy a copy.  It is such a nice keepsake.

Here are few examples of pages from this year's book.

I do a page for each child on the team and then one on the coaches.  The parents and team love them.  This year I did a new project for the team, posters.  They were 24" x 18" and we had them laminated.  The kids loved them, but what hockey player wouldn't love to have a poster featuring themselves!!!

L.O.V.E. https://www.beththomanderphotography.com/blog/2013/5/love My favourite subject for my photos is my family!  I have learned so much from Nick Kelsh on manual photography and I feel like I have gotten a lot better at shooting portrait photos of our children.  Lauren took Nick's Going Manual course as well and she took the photo of Todd and I.  Great job Lauren!

I had a blank spot on my dining room wall and I thought this idea would look great here.

I designed these 4 photo panels in Creative Memories Storybook Creator.  I did the 12 x 12 size but you could just as easily do the 8 x 8 size depending on how much wall space you have to work with in your home.  I ordered these on the wood photo panels because I don't like the results of black and white portraits on the tin photo panels.

I love where I have these hung because I see them from where I watch tv, where we serve our meals, the kitchen and it is one of the first things I see when I walk into our home.  Also, I have them hung beside one of my other favourite photos that is seven years old.  I love seeing the difference  and similarities in the children in those seven years.

These are easy to create and add so much charm to our home!

Creative Memories Baby Blog Hop! https://www.beththomanderphotography.com/blog/2013/4/creative-memories-baby-blog-hop-3
Welcome to the Creative Memories Blog Hop!  If you arrived here from the Creative Memories Traditional Blog you are in the right place!  This the second hop for this Blog Hop event.

So you know the old saying that with every child you have you take less photos? Well not always true! When our first two children were born all those years ago, I wasn't a scrapbooker, but when our third was born I had been a consultant for 6 years so I was going to take all of the “right” photos this time. Now, don't get me wrong, I took lots and lots of photos of Lauren and Ben, but with Grant I went a little overboard, shall we say. In the first month of his life I took 1000 photos and I know this because of being able to look that up on Memory Manager.

Well I didn't just store the photos in Memory Manager, I have made beautiful albums about Grant. So, two StoryBooks created in Storybook Creator 4.0, an 8 x 8 traditional album, an ABC album, paper albums and two 12 x 12 albums later I am still not caught up on Grant's photos. Grant is now seven years old and in his albums he is only about 20 months old.

I love when Creative Memories comes out with new baby products, because I get inspired to work on my backlog of baby and toddler photos of Grant. With the NEW It's a Boyproducts I am determined to bring Grant's albums up to date. I love that all of these products coordinate and look beautiful together and I can do some pages digitally and some traditionally and they will looking amazing together in Grant's album. The digital products will help me get caught up quickly!

Stubborn one.... https://www.beththomanderphotography.com/blog/2013/4/stubborn-one-3 Funny story I wanted to share...our trip to Disney over March Break was so much fun for all of us but not as we thought it would be.  We thought Grant was going to be the perfect age for meeting the characters, well not so!

For the first day he went along with meeting a few characters, Buzz, Stitch, Donald and Goofy and then on our second day he put his foot down.  No more! He didn't want to wait in a line up to get an autograph or a photo.  So on the inside this was crushing me, but we just couldn't convince him.  He even said "they aren't real you know, they are just people dressed up in costumes".  Well I didn't believe him.  We are in Disney and they must be real.

So at Hollywood Studios I didn't listen to him when he said he didn't want to meet Lightning McQueen and Mater, I stood in the line while he stood with his arms crossed and said I am not doing it. I wish I had a photo of him in line, but I didn't see the humour in it then.  We got to the front of the line, and no way could I talk him into getting a photo.  I said "Grant, you wasted our time standing in line and now you won't get in the photo?"  He very politely responded, " you should have listened to me because I told you I wasn't getting in the photo in the beginning."  Needless to say I was thrilled when Ben said "I want a photo!"

So no more character lineups for us, just rides and shows were on Grant's agenda!

Stubborn one.... https://www.beththomanderphotography.com/blog/2013/4/stubborn-one Funny story I wanted to share...our trip to Disney over March Break was so much fun for all of us but not as we thought it would be.

Mixing palettes! https://www.beththomanderphotography.com/blog/2012/11/mixing-palettes-3 I had one more page to complete in Lauren's album after the retreat and I always struggle with what to put on the back page.  I like 2 page spreads so it is difficult for me to do one.  I decided to take one photo and use up a bunch of old products.  I love that CM has everything matching when you buy a power palette but it is sometime fun to be creative and mix up your products and they still work together.  On this page I used, Blush Blooms (some of you may remember it), Reflections die cut shapes, Reflections flowers, Delight Flowers, Enchanted Flowers, Divine flowers, Nancy O'Dell Hummingbird Die Cut shapes, Reflections Ribbon, Shine Epoxy stickers, Divine Epoxy stickers, Enchanted Epoxy stickers, Blush Blooms stickers, White script ABC/123 and then I added a ribbon made with the NEW Zig Zag Border Cartridge.  It all came together to make a pretty page!

Fall Favourites https://www.beththomanderphotography.com/blog/2012/10/fall-favourites-3

The Fall is a beautiful time of the year.  Todd and I started dating in the Fall and were married in the Fall so maybe that is why I love it so much.  It is my favourite time of year to take photos because the sun is beautiful in the fall and the colours are amazing.  I have shared some of my photos here in a couple of my pages.  I used the Autumn Breeze Digital Kit from CM Storybook 4.0.
